Description for Chart 4
Colorectal cancer, age-standardized incidence rates per 100,000, by year and sex, Canada, 1992 to 2007

This is a line graph which illustrates the age standardized number of new cases of colorectal cancer from 1992 to 2007. There are three solid lines, one represents males, one represents females and one represents both sexes.

On the x-axis years are listed from 1992 to 2007 in one year increments.

On the y-axis the colorectal cancer rates per 100,000 are listed. The axis begins at 30 and ends at 70, increasing in increments of 5.

The rate of new cases of colorectal cancer in males is higher than the female rate at every year by about 20 cases per 100,000. In 1992 the rate is 63.3 per 100,000 and in 2007 it is 60.5 per 100,000. The rates remained relatively stable throughout this time period, fluctuating slightly. It peaked in 2000 at a rate of 64.2 per 100,000. The lowest rate was in 1997 at 59.1 per 100,000.

The rate of new cases of colorectal cancer in females is lower than the male rate at every year by about 20 cases per 100,000. In 1992, the rate was 43.3 per 100,000 and in 2007 it was 40.6 per 100,000. The rates remained relatively stable throughout this time period, fluctuating slightly. It peaked in 1998 at a rate of 42.8 per 100,000. The lowest rate was in 1997 at 40.4 per 100,000.

The colorectal cancer rates for both sexes combined falls in between the line for males and females because it is the average of these two rates. In 1992 the rate was 52.0 per 100,000 and in 2007 it was 49.7 per 100,000. The rate remained relatively stable over time, fluctuating slightly. It peaked in 2000 at a rate of 52.5 per 100,000. The lowest rates were in 1996 and 1997 at 48.7 per 100,000 for both years.
