Percentage of heavy, moderate and light smokers among daily smokers, by sex,
household population 12 and older, Canada, 2001 to 2011
These two line charts illustrate the total percentage of Canadians aged 12
and over, by sex, who are heavy smokers (25 or more cigarettes per day), moderate
smokers (15 to 24 cigarettes per day), and light smokers (less than or equal
to 14 cigarettes per day) from 2001 to 2011.
There are separate charts for males and females.
The Y axis is measured in percentages, and increases by increments of 10 from
0 to 70.
On the X axis, from left to right, are the years from 2001 to 2011.
The percentage of the male population aged 12 and older who were heavy smokers
was 30.9% in 2001, 26.9% in 2003, 26.9% in 2005, 26.7% in 2007, 24.4% in 2008,
22.6% in 2009, 23.2% in 2010, and 23.5% in 2011.
The percentage of the male population aged 12 and older who were moderate smokers
was 32.4% in 2001, 32.1% in 2003, 32.3% in 2005, 31.3% in 2007, 30.4% in 2008,
33.0% in 2009, 33.8% in 2010, and 33.5% in 2011.
The percentage of the male population aged 12 and older who were light smokers
was 36.7% in 2001, 41.1% in 2003, 41.9% in 2005, 42.0% in 2007, 45.2% in 2008,
44.3% in 2009, 43.0% in 2010, and 43.0% in 2011.
The percentage of the female population aged 12 and older who were heavy smokers
was 20.3% in 2001, 18.4% in 2003, 16.7% in 2005, 15.0% in 2007, 13.9% in 2008,
11.5% in 2009, 14.2% in 2010, and 14.2% in 2011.
The percentage of the female population aged 12 and older who were moderate
smokers was 28.6% in 2001, 26.5% in 2003, 26.4% in 2005, 25.9% in 2007, 26.3%
in 2008, 28.9% in 2009, 24.6% in 2010, and 23.1% in 2011.
The percentage of the female population aged 12 and older who were light smokers
was 51.2% in 2001, 55.1% in 2003, 56.9% in 2005, 59.1% in 2007, 59.9% in 2008,
59.6% in 2009, 61.2% in 2010, and 62.6% in 2011.
