Mental health of the Canadian Armed Forces

This article highlights the latest data from the 2013 Canadian Forces Mental Health Survey. Findings will feature prevalence rates of selected mental health and alcohol disorders of Canadian Force members who have been deployed in support of the mission to Afghanistan. Some comparisons will also be made with the civilian population.

Understanding seniors' risk of falling and their perception of risk

This article highlights how seniors aged 65 and older perceive their risk of falling. Perceptions of risk are examined in comparison with a senior’s risk of falling. Using data from the 2008-2009 Canadian Community Health Survey – Healthy Aging, this article identifies groups of seniors who correctly perceive, overestimate and underestimate their risk of falling.

Ninety years of change in life expectancy

This article explores the patterns and frequency of death by age and by cause in the population. The main goal is to explain how and why life expectancy has changed over a 90 year period. Although the article is primarily focused on mortality, it concludes with a brief discussion about how living longer may be associated with deteriorating health in later years of life.

Adjusting the scales: Obesity in the Canadian population after correcting for respondent bias

This paper presents obesity estimates adjusted for certain biases in self-reported data. Adjusted estimates for adult Canadians by age, sex, and geography, that have not been previously reported, are provided using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS).
