This is a line chart that illustrates the mean Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) and the mean Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1) in litres by sex for a series of age groups.
The four lines represent male and female respondents for both FVC and FEV1.
The Y axis is measured in litres and increases in increments of one from 1.00 to 6.00.
The X axis from left to right shows data for the following age groups: 6 to 11, 12 to 19, 20 to 39, 40 to 59 and 60 to 79.
Data collected on respondents aged 6 to 79 demonstrate that lung function increases rapidly during childhood and adolescence, followed by a gradual decline during adulthood.
Males have larger FVC and FEV1 volumes in all age groups. This difference between the sexes is not significant in early childhood; however it increases to a maximum difference in the 20 to 39 age group. The remaining age groups continue to show a difference between males and females.
