• In 2013/2014, the majority of youth who were involved with the youth correctional system were being supervised in the community rather than in custody. In the nine reporting provinces and territories, 90% of the 9,458 youth being supervised on a typical day were in community programs such as probation. 
• The rate of youth being supervised in the community on an average day was down 9% from the previous year (from 62 to 57 young persons per 10,000 youth).  The rate of youth in custody, the incarceration rate, decreased from 7 to 6 per 10,000 youth and was down for the sixth consecutive year. 
• The number of youth entering the correctional system also declined (-22%) in 2013/2014 in comparison to the previous year. For the 8 reporting jurisdictions, there were 6,530 youth who began an involvement with correctional services.  Most youth began their period of involvement serving a term of probation (51%) or in pre-trial detention (27%).
• Admissions are counted each time a youth begins supervision or moves from one type of correctional supervision to another. Admissions to correctional services declined in all but two of nine reporting jurisdictions (Northwest Territories and Nunavut) in 2013/2014, resulting in a 14% decline overall from the previous year.
• In 2013/2014, males accounted for approximately three-quarters (77%) of youth admissions to correctional services.
• Almost nine out of ten youth admissions (87%) involved young persons who were at least 15 years of age at the time of admission in 2013/2014.
• The over-representation of Aboriginal youth in correctional services persisted in 2013/2014. While representing 7% of the youth population, Aboriginal youth accounted for 41% of youth admissions to the correctional system.
