The "total" count represents the number of lawyers providing legal aid services across Canada as reported by legal aid plans. The ratio of private to staff lawyers does not necessarily reflect the proportion of work that is done by each group.
Figures are as of March 31.
In Prince Edward Island in 2004/2005, four new staff lawyers were hired to work on civil legal aid matters. As a result, staff delivery of legal aid services was increased and private sector delivery was reduced.
In New Brunswick in 2004/2005, many members of the private bar refused to take legal aid cases. Information on the number of private lawyers providing service is not available.
In Ontario, the private lawyer count includes per diem duty counsel.
