  1. The federal government spent $4.16 billion on culture in 2009/2010, compared with $4.01 billion in 2008/2009.
  2. Broadcasting accounted for the biggest share (46.7 %) of the total federal spending on culture, followed by the heritage sector (29.5 %), which includes museums, public archives and national libraries, historic and nature parks, and historic sites.
  3. Federal government operating and capital expenditures on culture accounted for 81.1% of the total, whereas grants, contributions and transfers for culture represented 18.9%.

In fact, without the fluctuations in capital outlays on culture, spending on culture increased in most provinces and territories in 2009/2010.
  5. Provincial and territorial governments allocated 61.2 % of their total cultural expenditures to grants, contributions and transfers, while operating and capital spending represented 38.8%.
  6. Municipal governments spent a total of $2.95 billion on culture in 2009, compared with $2.73 billion in 2008.
  7. Excluding inter-governmental transfers, consolidated spending on culture by all three levels of government amounted to $9.59 billion in 2009/2010. This is higher than in 2008/2009 when it was $9.51 billion (constant 2009/2010 dollars).
