The Y axis displays the most serious form of spousal violence, from top to bottom, the axis presents  Threatened, threw something; Pushed, shoved, slapped;  Kicked, bit, hit, hit with something; Beaten, choked, threatened with gun/knife, or sexual assaulted; and Sexually assaulted.           

Each form of spousal violence has two horizontal bars which from top to bottom represent females and males.

The X axis measures percentages, from left to right, and increases by increments of five, from 0 to 45%.

In 2004, the greatest proportion of abused women indicated that the most serious violence they experienced was being pushed, shoved or slapped, accounting for 40%; 23% of females victims reported that the most serious violence used against them involved being beaten, choked, or being threatened with or had a gun or knife used against them; 16% had been sexually assaulted; 11% experienced being threatened or something thrown at them; and 10% experienced being kicked, bit, hit, hit with something.

In 2004, the greatest proportion of abused men indicated that the most serious violence they experienced was being pushed, shoved or slapped accounting for 34%; 34% also experienced being kicked, bit, hit, hit with something; 15% reported that the most serious violence used against them involved being beaten, choked, or being threatened with or had a gun or knife used against them; and another 15% reported experiencing being threatened or having something thrown at them. No percentage was given for men being sexually assaulted, the data being too unreliable to be published.
