Percentage of people who report that they feel reasonably safe or very safe of walking after dark in their neighbourhood, by level of trust toward people in their neighbourhood and age group, 2003

The graph compares the likelihood of feeling reasonably or very safe in one's neighbourhood at night, based on the level of trust in neighbourhood residents. Information is given for four age groups: 25 to 54 years, 55 to 64 years, 65 to 74 years, and 75 years and up. In the four age groups, people who said they trusted their neighbours were more likely to say that they felt safe from crime when walking alone in their neighbourhood at night. In the 65 to 74 age group, for example, around 50% of those who did not trust most of their neighbours said they felt safe. This proportion was over 70% for people who said they trusted most of their neighbours.
