The after-tax median income of elderly couples and elderly living alone grew constantly between 1980 and 2002. Specifically, the median income of elderly couples rose from around $28,000 to almost $37,000 in 2003. The increases were similar for both elderly men and women living alone. However, elderly women living alone had lower median income than men in 2003 (approx. $18,000 for women versus around $20,000 for men).
