Percentage of seniors who were helped in the previous month, by living arrangement, 2003

This graph illustrates the proportion of elderly people who received one of four types of assistance: housework, transportation, teaching or practical advice, and emotional support. The information is presented by the status of the person in the household: lives alone, lives with a spouse, lives with other people. Aside from teaching or practical advice, elderly people who live alone are much more likely than others to receive assistance from people who do not live with them. For example, 35% of elderly people who live alone said they received transportation assistance, compared to less than 15% of those who live with a spouse or with other people.
