Percentage of people who expressed their views on an issue by contacting a newspaper or a politician, by age group and sex, 2003

The graph shows that in all age groups (25 to 54 years, 55 to 64 years, 65 to 74 years, 75 years and over), men are more likely than women to have expressed their opinion on a political issue by contacting the media or a politician in the past 12 months. The greatest difference is in the 75-and-over age group, in which approximately 14% of men had expressed their opinion on an issue, compared to less than 5% of women. The difference is slightly less among people aged 25 to 54 years. Around 12% of women and just below 15% of men had contacted a politician or the media to express their opinion on a political issue.
