Figure 2.5.1 Census metropolitan area population — Percentage of central city

This is a comparison of the largest (central) city population as a percentage of the census metropolitan area population. The census metropolitan area population is on the x-axis and the central city population as a percentage of the census metropolitan area population is on the y-axis.

Percentages range from slightly more than 20% to 100% and are relatively evenly distributed across this range for census metropolitan areas with less than 1,000,000 population. For the three largest census metropolitan areas with populations from almost 2 million to just under 5 million (Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver), central city percentages are about 54%, 30% and 28%, respectively.
