Figure 2.5.3 Census metropolitan area population — Percentage urban core, rule 1

This is a comparison of the urban core, rule 1 as a percentage of the census metropolitan area population. The census metropolitan area population is on the x-axis and the urban core, rule 1 population as a percentage of the census metropolitan area population is on the y-axis. The urban core, rule 1 includes the population of all census subdivisions that are wholly or partly within the urban core, so it is bigger than the urban core and includes more population.

Percentages range from slightly more than 70% to 100%. In general, the distribution is almost a mirror of Figure 2.5.2 Census metropolitan area population — Percentage urban core, except that the percentages are slightly higher and the distribution is more clustered for the census metropolitan areas with populations under 500,000 (75% to 100%). In contrast to Figure 2.5.2 Census metropolitan area population — Percentage urban core, this figure shows the urban core, rule 1 accounts for a slightly larger proportion of the census metropolitan area's total population than the urban core (nationally, accounts for 92%, compared to 90% for urban core).
