Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories and Nunavut

The data tables for the territories present 2006 Census of Agriculture farm and farm operator level data for the Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories. The 2006 Census of Agriculture did not identify any farms in Nunavut.

Territories' data not included in national totals

The data for the Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories are presented separately and are not included in the national totals because of the different definition of an agricultural operation in the territories and confidentiality constraints.

Definition of an agricultural operation differs in the territories

The definition of an agricultural operation was expanded in 1991 for the Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories to include:

  • herding wild animals (such as caribou, muskox, etc.)
  • breeding sled dogs
  • horse outfitting and rigging
  • harvesting indigenous plants and berries.

The same definition was used for the 2006 Census of Agriculture (which included Nunavut).

Confidentiality

Including the data for the territories in the national totals would require increased suppression of data to protect confidentiality because of the smaller number of farms in the territories. This could affect the provinces as well as the territories. For example, the total area of mixed grains in the Yukon Territory is sensitive and must be suppressed. In this case one of the provincial totals, instead of the other territory total, must be sacrificed to protect confidentiality since none of the farms in the Northwest Territories grow mixed grains. Otherwise, a simple subtraction from the Canada total area of mixed grains would identify the "missing" Yukon Territory figure.

Data quality

Due to the small number of farms in the Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories, any coverage and response errors would have a much larger impact on data quality than would be the case for any of the provinces.
