    The data for expenses are reported for the year preceding the census year.

    Changes to the question on rental and leasing of farm machinery in 2001 may affect the comparability of the data with previous censuses.

    Gross farm receipts and some operating expenses could be understated at the aggregate level due to the increase over time in contractual arrangements (e.g., contract feeding), custom work performed by non-farmers, and the involvement in primary agriculture of large non-farm corporations such as food processors, meatpacking plants and others.

    1. "Total expenses" does not include depreciation or capital cost allowance.
    2. "Custom work, contract work and hired trucking" was overstated in British Columbia in 2001 due to respondent errors.
    3. In 1981, heating costs were included in expenses for "Fuel, oil and lubricants for farm machinery."
    4. Changes to the question for fuel in 2001 may affect the comparability of the data with previous censuses.
