    Notes

    The definition of a census farm changed between 1921 and 2006. These changes affect the comparability of data among censuses. For a summary of these changes, refer to Census terms.

    Data for Newfoundland are not included in the Canada figures for the 1921, 1931 and 1941 Censuses of Agriculture since Newfoundland did not join Canada until 1949.

    1. In 1981, the area of unimproved land was under-reported in the four Western provinces.
    2. For each of the censuses conducted between 1921 and 1976, "Land in crops" included field crops, vegetables, fruits and nursery crops. Since 1981, the definition of "Land in crops" has been expanded to include sod.
    3. Since 1991, the data reported are for total oats, since the questionnaire made no distinction between the "Oats for grain" and the "Oats for fodder" components of "Oats".
    4. In 1931 and 1941, the number of farms reporting "Oats for grain," "Barley," "Corn for grain," "Flaxseed" and "Potatoes" are for 1930 and 1940 respectively. However, the area reported for each of these five field crops is for the census years 1931 and 1941.
    5. In 1981, the data reported pertain to "Barley for grain" only.
    6. From 1921 to 1966, both the area of potatoes grown and the number of farms reporting figures included potatoes grown for both home use and for sale. Since 1971, the data presented include only potatoes grown for sale.

    Data for Newfoundland are not included in the Canada figures for the 1921, 1931 and 1941 Censuses of Agriculture since Newfoundland did not join Canada until 1949.

    1. In 1981, the area of unimproved land was under-reported in the four Western provinces.
    2. For each of the censuses conducted between 1921 and 1976, "Land in crops" included field crops, vegetables, fruits and nursery crops. Since 1981, the definition of "Land in crops" has been expanded to include sod.
    3. Since 1991, the data reported are for total oats, since the questionnaire made no distinction between the "Oats for grain" and the "Oats for fodder" components of "Oats".
    4. In 1931 and 1941, the number of farms reporting "Oats for grain," "Barley," "Corn for grain," "Flaxseed" and "Potatoes" are for 1930 and 1940 respectively. However, the area reported for each of these five field crops is for the census years 1931 and 1941.

    Data for Newfoundland are not included in the Canada figures for the 1921, 1931 and 1941 Censuses of Agriculture since Newfoundland did not join Canada until 1949.

    1. In 1981, the area of unimproved land was under-reported in the four Western provinces.
    2. For each of the censuses conducted between 1921 and 1976, "Land in crops" included field crops, vegetables, fruits and nursery crops. Since 1981, the definition of "Land in crops" has been expanded to include sod.
    3. Since 1991, the data reported are for total oats, since the questionnaire made no distinction between the "Oats for grain" and the "Oats for fodder" components of "Oats".
    4. In 1931 and 1941, the number of farms reporting "Oats for grain," "Barley," "Corn for grain," "Flaxseed" and "Potatoes" are for 1930 and 1940 respectively. However, the area reported for each of these five field crops is for the census years 1931 and 1941.

    Notes

    The definition of a census farm changed between 1921 and 2006. These changes affect the comparability of data among censuses. For a summary of these changes, refer to Census terms.

    Data for Newfoundland are not included in the Canada figures for the 1921, 1931 and 1941 Censuses of Agriculture since Newfoundland did not join Canada until 1949.

    1. In 1981, the area of unimproved land was under-reported in the four Western provinces.
    2. For each of the censuses conducted between 1921 and 1976, "Land in crops" included field crops, vegetables, fruits and nursery crops. Since 1981, the definition of "Land in crops" has been expanded to include sod.
    3. Since 1991, the data reported are for total oats, since the questionnaire made no distinction between the "Oats for grain" and the "Oats for fodder" components of "Oats".
    4. In 1931 and 1941, the number of farms reporting "Oats for grain," "Barley," "Corn for grain," "Flaxseed" and "Potatoes" are for 1930 and 1940 respectively. However, the area reported for each of these five field crops is for the census years 1931 and 1941.
    5. In 1981, the data reported pertain to "Barley for grain" only.
    6. From 1921 to 1966, both the area of potatoes grown and the number of farms reporting figures included potatoes grown for both home use and for sale. Since 1971, the data presented include only potatoes grown for sale.
