Notes:
The reporting methodology for the income variables for the Census of Population changed from respondent-supplied information in 2001 to a combination of respondent-supplied and income tax data in 2006. This change breaks data comparability for the income series as it relates to the farming sector. Refer to Break in the Agriculture–Population linkage net farm income data series for more information on the factors that explain such variances in census data.

  1. This is a count of distinct operators; hence, operators of two or more separate farms were included only once in the total. The data for the variable "total number of farm operators" in this table are derived from Agriculture–Population Linkage 20% sample data, which have been used to derive estimates for the entire population. These data will differ from corresponding data in the Farm Data and Farm Operator Data release tables, which were based on data collected for all farms.
  2. Questions pertaining to education on the Census of Population questionnaire changed substantially between 2001 and 2006, principally to reflect developments in Canada's education system. These changes improved the quality of data collected by the census but mean that comparisons with data from previous censuses must be limited. Data for the two census years are compared for two groups: persons without a university degree and persons with a university degree (bachelor and above).
  3. The data in this table are for farm operators on both unincorporated and incorporated farms. Farm operators receive net farm income from unincorporated farm operations. Unincorporated farms may also distribute funds to the farm operator as rent. Incorporated farms do not distribute net farm income to the farm operator, but may pay wages and salaries, rent and/or dividends instead.
  4. Investment income includes payments of dividends including those from farm corporations, interest on deposits and bonds, and other investment income excluding retirement investments (Registered Retirement Savings Plan [RRSPs] and Registered Retirement Income Fund [RRIFs]).
  5. "Other sources of income" includes government transfer payments (excluding farm-related government payments), retirement income including that from retirement investments (Registered Retirement Savings Plan [RRSPs] and Registered Retirement Income Fund [RRIFs]), and all other income. This category is a compilation of the "other income," "government transfer payments" and "retirement income" classifications from the Census of Population.
