The first two digits identify the broad subject category of the product.
The third through seventh digits are internal Statistics Canada control numbers.
The eighth digit is used to bring together related products
| X | This is the default. Most products will only have this code. |
| P | Preliminary. This product is in advance of something that will be released later (the products, identified with “X” in the eighth position). |
| S | Supplement. Information, added to an existing product, that cannot stand on its own. |
| R | Revision. Applies only when a product has undergone substantial changes. |
| U | Update. Sections that add to or replace existing information. This would apply to a loose leaf service, a diskette or CD-ROM product. |
| G | Guide. This is a guide to the main product that is a datafile or database such as a microdata file. |
The ninth digit identifies the medium of the publication.

| B | Braille. |
| C | CD-ROM. |
| D | Diskette. |
| I | PDF. Prior to July 2003 this was used for all Internet formats. |
| K | Kit. Comprised of more than one product and usually mixed media (no longer used). |
| M | Microfiche. |
| P | Paper. |
| V | DVD. |
| W | HTML format. |
The tenth digit is the language of the product.

The remaining part of the catalogue number is the issue number, a sequential internal control number containing the year of release followed by the release number for the year.
