Determinants of postsecondary participation

Article highlights

  • Postsecondary education is widely regarded as crucial to the labour market success of young persons. In an economy requiring high levels of education and knowledge-based skills, equity of access to postsecondary education remains an important policy issue. In order to inform policies and programs related to youth and education, it is important to understand what factors are associated with participation in postsecondary education.
  • Results from the 1995 School Leavers Follow-Up Survey show that just over 40% of high school graduates had attended university, while nearly 30% participated in community college/CEGEP, and just 7% took part in trade-vocational training.
