On an average day in 2014/2015, correctional services programs in nine reporting provinces and territories supervised 7,966 youth aged 12 to 17 in either custody or a community program. This represents a rate of 54 youth in correctional services per 10,000 youth, a 14% decline from the previous year.

In all, 9 in 10 youth under correctional supervision in 2014/2015 were supervised in a community program.

Each time a youth begins supervision or moves from one type of correctional supervision to another, it is considered an admission. There were nearly 17,800 youth admissions into correctional services in 2014/2015 in the nine reporting jurisdictions, a 15% decline from the previous year.

  Note to readers

Data from the Corrections Key Indicator Report for Adults and Youth for 2014/2015 are now available. This survey reports on trends in correctional populations and provides a basis for calculating incarceration rates.

The Youth Custody and Community Services survey data for 2014/2015 are also available. This survey provides information on initial entry, admissions to and releases from youth correctional services for nine reporting provinces and territories. Survey data include information on characteristics of the offender, including sex, age and length of time served.

Not all jurisdictions were able to report data for 2014/2015. While nine jurisdictions provided overall average counts, data are unavailable for Quebec and are limited to custody counts for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Alberta. Admissions data are, likewise, available for nine jurisdictions with Nova Scotia, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Alberta not reporting.
