(year-over-year change)
There were 458,844 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 91 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in March, compared with 421,525 movements in March 2017, an increase of 8.9%.
An increase in both itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) and local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) contributed to the year-over-year increase in March. Itinerant movements rose 4.9% to 318,899 and local movements were up 19.1% to 139,945.
Domestic itinerant movements (within Canada) increased to 259,627 in March, a 5.0% increase from the same month the previous year. Transborder movements (between Canada and the United States) grew 3.0% to 41,344 movements, while other international traffic rose 7.4% to 17,928 movements.
In March, 10 airports accounted for 40.0% of total activity. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, the nation's busiest airport, reported 40,807 movements, an increase of 5.4% compared with March 2017. This was followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia, which reported 27,226 movements (+4.1%) and Montréal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau International, Quebec, with 20,417 movements (+6.5%).
