Stocks of total frozen poultry meat in cold storage increased 5.3% from December 1, 2017, to 83 446 tonnes on December 1, 2018. The largest increase came from frozen chicken stocks, up 18.6% from the previous year to 49 486 tonnes. While monthly placements of turkey poults have risen slightly since the data series started in 1970, placements of hatchery chicks have tripled, up from 18.9 million birds in November 1970. Chicken meat available per person for consumption has more than doubled since 1970, while turkey meat available for consumption has remained steady. In contrast, beef available for consumption has decreased by one-third.
Egg production rose 2.8% from October 2017 to 66.7 million dozen in October 2018, continuing its steady growth on a year-over-year basis.
