Information from the Farm Financial Survey for 2017 is now available. The Farm Financial Survey provides data on average farm assets, liabilities, capital investments, capital sales, revenues, and expenses.

Average net worth per farm in Canada rose 2.1% from 2015 to $2.9 million in 2017. Over the same period, average farm assets grew 4.4% to $3.6 million, while average liabilities increased 14.9% to $693,778. Dairy farms reported the largest increase in average net worth per farm at 13.5%, followed by potato (+10.6%) and hog and pig (+8.8%) farms. Poultry and egg farms had the highest average net worth per farm in 2017 at $6.0 million, followed by potato ($5.1 million) and dairy cattle and milk production ($4.3 million) farms.

Average capital investment per farm in Canada fell 6.0% from 2015 to $125,852 in 2017. However, the largest investment category, farm machinery and equipment, increased 14.6% to $65,370 over the same period.

Average gross farm revenue declined by 3.2% compared with 2015, while average operating expenses were down 4.4%. As a result, average net farm income in Canada rose 2.9% to $100,966 in 2017.
