All Canadians are concerned about the health, economic and social ramifications of COVID-19. However, a short study published today suggests that immigrants to Canada may be more concerned about the impact of COVID-19 than Canadian-born people.

In regard to health, for example, almost half of immigrants (49%) reported that they were "very" or "extremely" concerned about their own health, compared with one-third (33%) of the Canadian-born.

Over half of immigrants (53%) reported that they were "very" or "extremely" concerned about the possibility of civil disorder, compared with about one-third (37%) of the Canadian-born.

Over two-fifths of immigrant men (43%) reported that the crisis would have a "major" or "moderate" impact on their finances, compared with about one-quarter (27%) of Canadian-born men.

This study coincides with the launch of a series of virtual conferences on selected themes related to the multiple social and economic effects of COVID-19, an initiative of the COVID-19 Social Impacts Network. The first of these virtual conferences, "The economic and social impact of COVID-19 on newcomers to Canada," will be held today, May 1, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
