To provide Canadians with timely economic data, Statistics Canada is releasing early estimates of the Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI) for June. These are referred to as flash estimates and will be subject to revision when the index is officially released on July 31. Given that flash estimates are calculated with preliminary data, these values should be used with caution.

In June, the IPPI was up 0.4% on a month-over-month basis, following a 1.1% increase in May. This increase was primarily due to higher prices for energy and petroleum products (+11.7%). Refined petroleum products, such as motor gasoline (+15.1%), light fuel oils (+16.0%) and diesel fuel (+16.0%) were mainly responsible for the gain in this commodity group. Jet fuel (+15.1%) posted its first increase in June, following five months of decline.

Excluding energy and petroleum products, the IPPI declined by 0.6%, mostly due to lower prices for motorized and recreational vehicles (-1.4%), electrical, electronic, audiovisual and telecommunication products (-1.1%) and pulp and paper products (-1.2%).
