Canadian oilseed processors crushed 10 290 286 tonnes of canola in 2020, up 7.1% from 2019, while the amount of soybeans crushed declined 7.8% to 1 757 270 tonnes. Oil production totalled 4 495 495 tonnes for canola and 318 788 tonnes for soybeans, while meal production totalled 5 786 430 tonnes for canola and 1 364 458 tonnes for soybeans.

The domestic seed crush of canola reached a record high 10.3 million tonnes in 2020. Strong world demand, partially due to an increase in vegetable oil consumption, helped push Canada's canola crush to record levels in 2020. Canola oil (+7.4%) and canola meal (+7.5%) products both increased year over year and reached record highs.

Even though a significant share of canola is destined for the export market, canola oilseed processors remain an important buyer for Canadian growers. In the 2019/2020 crop year, domestic canola crush reached 10 129 000 tonnes, representing 41.9% of total disposition of canola in Canada. On the other hand, canola exports reached 10 042 000 tonnes during the same year, accounting for 41.5% of total disposition of canola in Canada.

In the United States, over the 2020 calendar year, oilseed processors crushed 60 076 890 tonnes of soybeans, up 5.8% from 2019, and 2 067 616 tonnes of canola, up 23.5%. Oil production totalled 11 509 145 tonnes for soybeans, and 865 672 tonnes for canola, while meal production totalled 44 127 912 tonnes for soybeans and 1 162 648 tonnes for canola.
