Canada has the longest coastline in the world, and its marine sectors make a significant contribution to provincial, regional and national economies. In 2016, 14% of Canada's population lived within 10 km of the coast. In 2018, coastal provinces depended on Canada's oceans for 3.8% of employment and 4.1% of gross domestic product (GDP). Newfoundland and Labrador had the highest marine dependence in 2018, with 16.8% of jobs and 30.0% of GDP relying on marine sectors.

The overall contribution of marine sectors to the Canadian economy represented 1.6% each of national employment and GDP. This important sector of the Canadian economy depends on sustainable management of Canada's oceans. To this end, as of 2019, 13.8% of Canada's ocean area had been conserved or protected.

  Note to readers

This article is the result of a collaboration between Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Statistics Canada on a pilot project for ocean accounts. This article provides estimates of the contribution of marine industries to Canadian gross domestic product and employment, driven by direct, indirect and induced demand from 2014 to 2018. It includes all major private-sector industries with a direct dependence on the oceans (extractive and non-extractive uses), as well as activities of the public sector, universities, and non-governmental environmental organizations with responsibilities for safety, managing ocean activities and research.
