The heart of your community is the people. What they do, where they live and how they live are the factors that define your community.
(We see Ben, early 60s, comfortable and friendly guy, talking in front of a graphic background representing the countryside.)
Ben: "When we were younger, my wife and I decided to move our family to the city for work. Now that our kids are grown and we're looking to retire, we've decided to move back to the outskirts. We like the space and the quiet. Like many of us in the area, we still have to commute to work. The drive in isn't great because the roads are in need of work. Thanks to the census data, which demonstrated the high volume of traffic in our area, we were able to provide the city with the information they needed for the current road to be repaved. And they've started planning construction on a new road into the city to help with congestion. It's nice to know you're being heard."
(Elsa, a recent South Asian immigrant in her 30s, stands in front of a graphic background of a hospital and speaks.)
Elsa: "We first chose this area because there were other South Asian families living here. We are Bengali, so it's nice to have people around that we have so much in common with. Initially, there were no medical services. Then, a great doctor's office opened up nearby. The doctor told me that the census data showed that there were a lot of families here, so it made sense to open up their practice in my neighbourhood. My husband and I are very happy to have a family doctor in our community."
(Jason, a university student in his early 20s, speaks in front of a graphic background of a university.)
Jason: "I chose to go away to school to get the full university experience. In second year, I moved to an apartment with some friends. We couldn't afford anything closeby, so we had to take two buses to get to classes. The transferring alone added an extra half hour to the total commute time. There was a lot of us in the same boat. Someone from the city must have noticed from the census data that there were lots of students living in that area, so they added a direct bus route. It's so much faster! And we don't have to wait in the cold during winter."
(Kalene, 40s, speaks in front of a graphic background of a public housing project.)
Kalene: "I've lived in the same apartment building for 15 years. We have a pretty active tenant group here and we all really believe in public housing. I'm proud that we've secured government funding for a community garden and a children's play area. It's so easy to take a few minutes to participate in the census, which gives people like me important information to convince sponsors that our community is in need of certain features and improvements."
(Mike, firefighter, 40s, speaks in front of a graphic background of houses.)
Mike: "The best part of my job is talking to people. As a firefighter, you get to save lives not only by fighting fires directly but through teaching fire prevention. Census data has helped us make a strong case for a new fire station, which allows us to better serve our growing community with the best fire prevention services and programs. I would know, I'm a firefighter."
