Who is conducting this survey?
Statistics Canada is conducting the Survey of Employees under Federal Jurisdiction on behalf of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).
What businesses are under federal jurisdiction?
Businesses under federal jurisdiction are governed by federal labour standards legislation, and includes, among others, the banking, postal, telecommunications and transportation sectors (including air, maritime, rail and road).
Why can't you get my answers from other surveys?
Although some of the questions in this survey are similar to those in other surveys, no other Statistics Canada survey provides information specifically on the topic of employees working for businesses under federal jurisdiction. The information from this survey will guide research and analysis to update the Canada Labour Code.
Am I obligated to take part in this survey?
While this is a voluntary survey, your participation is very important. The intention of the survey is to capture the experiences of individuals from all walks of life. Your participation will help ensure that survey results are representative of the Canadian population as a whole.
How are people selected for this survey?
Individuals were randomly selected from a variety of different industries that are under federal jurisdiction across Canada.
In being selected, you represent the views of other employees in your industry and region. Your participation in this survey ensures that we have an accurate and up-to-date picture of the working conditions of employees under federal jurisdiction.
Where did you get my contact information?
Your contact information was obtained either from your tax records or from your employer in accordance with the Statistics Act and the Income Tax Act. Statistics Canada will safeguard this information and use it only for statistical purposes.
Why do you have to ask demographic questions such as my gender, postal code or citizenship status?
When your data arrives at Statistics Canada—whether it be from surveys or administrative data sources—some of your private information is used to create a demographic profile. Then we remove and lock away the private information, keeping only data like gender, age and geographic region. This is merged with information from other people who share the same demographic profile (for example, the same gender, same age and same geographic region).
By analyzing this large database, researchers can observe patterns and trends and provide important information, which is used by governments, non-profit organizations, researchers, and the general public.
How will I benefit from the results and what good will come of this survey?
Your participation in this survey will provide important data that will be used to understand job quality in Canada. In order to create new policies and programs or change existing ones, decision-makers need accurate, reliable information. This survey is being conducted to fill data gaps, and provide timely information that governments can use. The information from this survey will guide research and analysis to update the Canada Labour Code.
How will you safeguard the confidentiality of my information?
As with all Statistics Canada surveys, any information provided will remain confidential pursuant to the Statistics Act. Statistics Canada takes the privacy of Canadians very seriously. Published data can never identify you or your household.
To find out more about the measures in place to safeguard the confidentiality of your information, visit Statistics Canada's Trust Centre.
