OTTAWA — Statistics Canada announced today that February 1 marks the beginning of collection for the 2011 Census and the National Household Survey (NHS). Wayne R. Smith, Chief Statistician of Canada, is asking all Canadians to help make the census and NHS a success.
In addition, Mr. Smith said Statistics Canada will be asking all levels of government, as well as groups such as ethno-cultural and community and social service organizations, to lend a hand in promoting the census and the NHS. With broad-based support, both the census and NHS can provide the information that communities need for decision making.
The 2011 Census/NHS begins today with early enumeration in the Far North. Residents of remote communities will be counted before they relocate to smaller and more scattered fishing and hunting camps for the summer. First to be counted are the residents of the Quebec communities of Chisasibi and Kkujjuaq.
Early enumeration, which lasts until April, is conducted by personal interview. During the two-month period, census enumerators will visit more than 27,000 households in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and Labrador, plus some communities in northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec.
Collection of the census and NHS for the rest of Canada will start May 2.
