This is a line chart showing the average annual percentage change in the All-items Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 1922 to 2012.

From 1922 to 1933, the average annual percentage change in the All-items CPI tended to be below zero, varying from a high of 1.1% in 1925, 1926 and 1929 to a low of minus 9.9% in 1931.

From 1933 to 1991, change in the All-items CPI remained mostly above zero, varying widely between peaks of 14.6% in 1948 and 12.5% in 1981 and a low of minus 1.4% in 1953. From 1992 to 2012, the average annual percentage change in the All-items Consumer Price  was relatively stable, varying between a high of 2.9% in 2011 and a low 0.1% in 1994.

The index’s lowest percentage change was minus 9.9% in 1931 and the highest percentage change was is 14.6% in 1948.
