The Business Number initiative provides businesses with a single account number for the following four major Government of Canada programs:
- customs, import and export (RM)
- payroll source deductions (RP)
- corporate income tax (RC)
- Goods and Services Tax (RT)
Business Numbers have been mandatory for all export reporting since January 1997.
Exporters must have a valid Business Number, activated for exporting, in order to participate in the Canadian Automated Export Declaration (CAED) program. When you apply to use the CAED application, you will be asked for a Business Number and a CAED representative will verify that it is activated for exporting.
If your Business Number is not activated, you will be required to contact the Canada Revenue Agency to update the RM account with the correct company name and address and also to register for exporting.
Contact the Canada Revenue Agency from 07:00 to 17:00 (Central time) at 1-800-959-5525 to activate your Business Number for exporting.
