Statistics Canada is using Reddit as a communications tool and outreach channel to reach and engage with Canadians.

Statistics Canada does not endorse any of the views expressed in user comments or posts, and in no way verifies or confirms the accuracy of those posts. Questions or comments that violate the agency's Rules of engagement may result in being deleted from the account.


Statistics Canada has one official bilingual, self-moderated, Reddit account: u/statcanada.


By following Statistics Canada on Reddit, you may get:

  • interesting facts on various aspects of Canada
  • new data releases on various subjects
  • information on survey and census collection activities
  • information on new products and services
  • information about recruitment at Statistics Canada
  • an opportunity to comment on the agency's direction and programs;

Statistics Canada recognizes that the Internet is a 24/7 medium, and your comments and questions are welcome at any time. However, posting and moderating will occur during regular office hours, Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Messages posted after business hours or on weekends and statutory holidays will be read as early as possible.

Statistics Canada is committed to serving its clients in a prompt, reliable, courteous, and fair manner. Depending on the nature of the enquiry, response times will vary. To ensure prompt service on a Reddit post, with the exception of AMAs (Ask Me Anything), Statistics Canada will:

  • acknowledge receipt and/or answer direct questions within 2 business days;
  • advise clients of any change in response time, and clearly explain the reason for the change.

Reddit may occasionally be unavailable. Statistics Canada is not responsible for a lack of service caused by Reddit downtime.


Statistics Canada will submit "text posts" and "link posts" to the official bilingual Statistics Canada Reddit account, u/StatCanada, and to different subreddits that are relevant to the topic of the post.

Statistics Canada welcomes feedback and ideas that are constructive and relevant from its followers. All comments will be read and any emerging themes or helpful suggestions will be passed to the appropriate area in the organization.

Post frequency

The number of posts published to Reddit will vary on a daily basis, depending on the number of publications, reports and analysis being released.

Use of "Crossposting"

Statistics Canada may choose to crosspost its Reddit posts to multiple subreddits in order to extend the reach of its messages. The decision to crosspost a message to a subreddit does not imply endorsement of any kind.

Engaging with users

Statistics Canada will address Reddit questions that meet our Rules of engagement when they are received: on posts published on our account, through private messages or via direct mentions. Statistics Canada's decision to engage with a particular Reddit post, through voting or commenting, does not imply endorsement of any kind.


Statistics Canada will only use the "Subscribe" function for subreddits related to Canada and its provinces and territories. Statistics Canada will only "Follow" the accounts of other Government of Canada institutions, partners and other statistical organizations publishing information that is relevant to its mandate.

Links to other websites

Reddit posts by Statistics Canada may include, for your convenience, links to websites that are not under the responsibility of Statistics Canada or the Government of Canada. Since many of these websites are not subject to the Official Languages Act, they may not be available in both official languages. Statistics Canada is not responsible for the accuracy, currency or reliability of the content, and is not endorsing the sites and their content in any way.
