To comply with various environmental rules, businesses invest in processes and technologies that eliminate or reduce pollution before it is created (pollution prevention), or before it is released into the environment (pollution abatement and control). However, the various industries do not all spend at the same rate and do not all use the same techniques. This depends on current regulations and economic growth in the industry. This study draws a portrait of the environmental protection expenditures by the three of the main industries in Canada: oil and gas extraction; petroleum and coal product manufacturing; and electric power generation, transmission and distribution.

This publication presents energy balance sheets in natural units and heat equivalents in primary and secondary forms, by province. Each balance sheet shows data on production, trade, interprovincial movements, conversion and consumption by sector. Analytical tables and details on non-energy products are also included. It includes explanatory notes, a historical energy summary table and data analysis. The publication also presents data on natural gas liquids, electricity generated from fossil fuels, solid wood waste and spent pulping liquor.

The Ecological Land Classification (ELC) is Statistics Canada's official classification for ecological areas in Canada.

The ELC was developed to enable the production of integrated statistics for ecological areas. It is a hierarchical framework that classifies ecological areas or ecosystems and that incorporates all major components of ecosystems: air, water land and biota. All boundaries in the ecological framework are matched to soil landscape polygons from the Soil Landscapes of Canada (SLC).

There are 15 ecozones at the top of the ecological land classification hierarchy. They cover the entire terrestrial extent of Canada.

These ecozones are subdivided into 53 ecoprovinces that contain 194 ecoregions, which can be further subdivided into 1,027 separate ecological units called ecodistricts.

The Industrial Water Survey will provide information about the quantities of water consumed and costs, sources, treatments and discharge of water used for manufacturing, mining and power generating industries. Additional industries will be surveyed in subsequent years.

The Industrial Water Survey uses three separate questionnaires to collect data from respondents, one for manufacturing, one for the mineral extraction industries and another for the thermal-electric power generators.

There is an independent sampling strategy for each of the three sectors. The frame used for sampling purposes is the Statistics Canada Business Register.

The sample for the thermal-electric power generating stations is a census. A probability design is used for sample selection in the manufacturing and mineral extraction sectors.

This analytical report depicts irrigation in Canada: it characterizes Canadian irrigators, estimates water volumes used and presents data on irrigation techniques, irrigation and conservation practices, as well as the sources and quality of the water used in agriculture. Information presented in the report come from the Agricultural Water Survey 2010, conducted as part of the Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators initiative.

The Methodological Guide: Canadian System of Environmental-Economic Accounting provides readers with information on environmental-economic accounts at Statistics Canada. It provides links to produced data and publications and describes the concepts, sources, and methods used to compile them. Topics include ecosystem accounting, asset accounts (natural resources in physical and monetary terms), physical flow accounts (energy and water use, and waste and greenhouse gas emissions), environmental activity statistics (expenditures on environmental protection), and the applications and extensions of those accounts (attribution of physical flows to final demand and intensity measures).

This user's guide has been developed by the Environmental Statistics Program to facilitate access to environmental-economic accounting information throughout Statistics Canada and to explain its linkage with international standards, the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting. This guide is continually being updated to maintain its relevance.

These educational resources provide instructors with innovative materials, lesson plans and case study assignments to accompany the 2013 release of the Human Activity and the Environment article, “Measuring ecosystem goods and services in Canada.” The materials and activities were developed by the Critical Thinking Consortium, a non-profit, registered association of 55 educational partners—school districts, schools, teacher associations and other educational organizations.

Resources were developed for a junior high school, senior high school and introductory post-secondary audience. Curriculum links include grades 7 to 12 geography, social studies, biology, science and economics, as well as introductory post-secondary geography and environmental science.

This report presents results and analysis of two surveys: the Waste Management Industry Survey: Business Sector, and the Waste Management Industry Survey: Government Sector.

Information on the physical quantities of non-hazardous and hazardous waste collected, disposed of and recycled was gathered from these surveys.

The first survey covered those operations and facilities owned by businesses that provided waste management services while the second covered operations and facilities owned by Canadian local governments and other local bodies engaged in the delivery of waste management services.

Information on the employment and financial characteristics of businesses and local governments involved in the supply of these services is also reported.

Description:

This report presents results of a pilot survey designed to test the use of economic and operational data as inputs into the estimation of the releases of air contaminants from small and medium size enterprises within a given sector of the Canadian economy. As a proof of this concept, data from the Statistic Canada's Survey of Industrial Processes (SIP) was used along with relevant environmental and statistical modeling methods to calculate estimates for gasoline evaporative losses from retail gasoline outlets across Canada.
