This report provides the first pan-Canadian results of the PISA 2009 assessment of reading, mathematics and science by presenting the national and provincial results in order to complement the information presented in the PISA 2009 International report. Results are compared to other participating countries and across Canadian provinces. Chapter 1 provides information on the performance of Canadian 15-year-old students on the PISA 2009 assessment in reading. Chapter 2 presents results on the performance of Canada and the provinces in the minor domains of mathematics and science. Finally, the major findings and opportunities for further study are discussed in the conclusion.

A Profile of Education for Children with Disabilities is an article concerning the educational experiences of children aged 5 to 14 that were identified as having one or more disabilities on the 2006 Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS) and who attended school at the time of the 2006 Census. These experiences were measured using the responses of parents or guardians to the PALS, a post-censal survey conducted shortly after the 2001 and 2006 Census. Issues examined include the prevalence of specialized education, difficulties obtaining specialized education, met and unmet educational needs, and resulting outcomes.

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a collaborative effort among member countries of the OECD, designed to assess, on a regular basis, the achievement of 15-year-olds in reading, mathematical and scientific literacy through a common international test. This report provides results from the PISA 2006 assessment of student performance in science, reading and mathematics at the provincial level, and compares the achievement of Canadian students to that of students internationally. PISA 2006 has a special focus on science. Over fifty countries participated in PISA 2006, including all 30 OECD countries. About 22,000 15-year-olds from more than 1,000 schools took part in Canada.

There are large differences across provinces in the extent to which children with special needs due to physical, cognitive or behavioural disabilities attend regular school classes and the extent to which they have access to special education services. There are also large differences in the extent to which parents report that their special-needs children are being encouraged to reach their full potential in school and in their academic achievement relative to all Canadian children. This article draws on data from the 2001 Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS), the 2000 Youth in Transition Survey (YITS) and the 2002 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) to document these differences.

Today, disability is viewed more often as a social construct than a medical one. Educational reforms have changed the way in which children with disabilities are integrated into the school system. With data from the 2001 Participation and Activity Limitation Survey, this article looks at the prevalence of children with disabilities, whether they attend regular classes and the kind of conditions for which they need special services. It examines the issues about access to educational services needed : which services are most needed and used, and what barriers may get in the way of obtaining such services.
