What is the COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage Survey?

The COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage Survey is being conducted by Statistics Canada on behalf of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). This survey asks people living in the provinces and territories of Canada whether they have been vaccinated against COVID-19, their intentions to get vaccinated and about their knowledge and beliefs surrounding vaccination.

Why are you conducting this survey?

This survey is being conducted so that COVID-19 vaccination coverage rates can be measured over time, as vaccination campaigns are happening across Canada.

We want to find out about knowledge and perceptions of COVID-19 vaccines, and about the sources of information that people rely on.

Who is involved in conducting this survey?

The survey is being conducted by Statistics Canada, on behalf of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

What will this information be used for?

Survey results will help the Canadian, Provincial and Territorial governments

    • to plan their response to the COVID-19 pandemic
    • to inform communications with the public
    • to help plan vaccine distribution.

Why does the oldest (or youngest, second oldest, etc.) household member need to complete this survey?

Survey respondents are chosen randomly from each household, based on their age in relation to other household members. This way, each member of each household has an equal chance of being selected to answer the survey. The aim is to avoid bias in the survey results, so that research findings are applicable to adults of all ages in Canada. For statistical reasons, we cannot allow someone else in your household to replace you.

Why does the survey ask so many personal questions?

Personal questions are asked so that potential differences amongst diverse groups of Canadians may be identified and analyzed. Survey results are grouped by broad demographic groups before they are shared outside of StatCan. Results are closely scrutinized to make sure that no individual can be identified in the survey results.

I am against vaccines, why do you want to survey me?

Your feedback is important, even if you have not been vaccinated, or do not intend to be. We need to hear from Canadians from all points of view and all walks of life, so that data is representative of all of the people in Canada.

The information that you share with us will help plan a response to the pandemic that addresses the health and safety needs of people in Canada like yourself.

I have been asked similar questions about vaccination in another StatCan survey. Why am I being asked again?

This survey was designed specifically to measure COVID_19 vaccination rates over time, as well as to collect information on your thoughts and beliefs about vaccination as the COVID-19 vaccination campaigns roll out across Canada.

Although some of the questions asked may be similar to those included in other Statistics Canada surveys, each survey is built to offer a different perspective on the impacts of the pandemic. They are carried out at different times and within different contexts, and provide information that allows health agencies to manage distribution plans to benefit the most Canadians.

How do you protect my information?

As with all Statistics Canada surveys, any information provided will remain confidential pursuant to the Statistics Act.

Statistics Canada takes the privacy of Canadians very seriously. Published data can never identify you or your household.

To find out more about the measures in place to safeguard the confidentiality of your information, visit Statistics Canada's Trust Centre.

When will the results of the survey be available?

Information on the survey will be published in May 2021 in The Daily on Statistics Canada's website, and also on Health Canada's website.
