What is the Executive Work and Health Survey?
Developed by the Association of Professional Executives of the Public Service of Canada (APEX) with various experts in the field of occupational health research and organizational health, the Executive Work and Health Survey aims to describe the work environment of federal public service executives. This will, in turn, contribute to a better general understanding of the relationship between an individual's health and work environment.
The APEX, which has conducted the Executive Work and Health survey every five years since 1997, has contracted Statistics Canada to conduct this survey in 2021.
When does this survey take place?
Collection for this survey will take place from May 28 to July 9, 2021.
What kinds of questions does this survey ask?
This survey asks questions about your work conditions, job satisfaction, health, work-life balance, use of e-technology, physical activity, substance use, chronic conditions, quality of sleep, and educational level, among other topics.
How were the survey questions determined?
Each survey question intends to analyze the relationship between an individual's work environment and health, as well as factors that mitigate the effect of this relationship. Academics who specialize in this area of study selected these questions. Also, a great deal of the survey content comes from well-established scales and sets of questions used to measure specific concepts. Other questions, which have also been carefully developed and tested, are standard to Statistics Canada surveys.
Who is eligible to participate in the survey?
Executives who work in the occupational groups listed below can participate in this survey. These include organizations and agencies that fall under the Public Service Employment Act (those which are listed in Schedules I, IV and V of the Financial Administration Act as well as a legacy organization identified by the Association of Professional Executives of the Public Service of Canada) and have provided the information required for the survey frame.

How do I participate in this survey?
From May 28 to 31, all eligible participants will receive an email invitation from Statistics Canada containing a unique secure access code they can use to complete the survey online. Reminders will also be emailed in cases of non-response.
How long does the survey take to complete?
The survey takes about 30 minutes to complete. The survey does not need to be completed in one sitting. The link included in the survey invitation will allow you to end your session and pick up where you left off later.
Is this survey mandatory?
Your participation in this survey is voluntary; however, we encourage you to have your say. Your responses will provide valuable information for the Association of Professional Executives of the Public Service of Canada and other researchers. The Executive Work and Health Survey is unique in that it will provide indicators about the work conditions of federal public service executives that not available elsewhere.

Who will have access to the survey data?
Statistics Canada has signed a data-sharing agreement with the Association of Professional Executives of the Public Service of Canada (APEX). This agreement requires APEX to follow the same regulations imposed on Statistics Canada by the Statistics Act. This means that your information will remain confidential and will only be used for statistical purposes. Only survey participants who respond 'yes' to the data sharing question at the end of this survey will have their survey responses shared with APEX.
