This is a split horizontal bar graph that illustrates the percentage of non–smokers aged 12 or older who were exposed to second–hand smoke by province or territory and Canada for 2008. 

The Y axis lists all the provinces and territories with Canada at top followed by Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

The X axis from measures the percentages and increases by increments of 5 from 0 to 20.

The left half of the graph represents exposure to second-hand smoke in private vehicles and/or public places and the right half represents exposure to second–hand smoke at home.

The percentages for non–smokers exposed to second–hand smoke for Canada and each province are represented from top to bottom on the Y axis as follows:

  • Canada:  in private vehicles and/or public places 15.5%, at home 6.6%,

  • Newfoundland and Labrador: in private vehicles and/or public places 16.4%, at home 8.0%.

  • Prince Edward Island: in private vehicles and/or public places 13.4%, at home 7.5%, which should be interpreted with caution as the coefficient of variation is between 16.6% and 33.3%.

  • Nova Scotia: in private vehicles and/or public places 17.8%, at home 6.9%,  

  • New Brunswick: in private vehicles and/or public places 15.8%, at home 8.4%,

  • Quebec: in private vehicles and/or public places 14.5%, at home 9.9%,

  • Ontario: in private vehicles and/or public places 16.2%, at home 5.9%,  

  • Manitoba: in private vehicles and/or public places 15.2%, at home 6.6%,

  • Saskatchewan: in private vehicles and/or public places 14.8%, at home 7.7%,  

  • Alberta: in private vehicles and/or public places 15.9%, at home 5.2%,

  • British Columbia: in private vehicles and/or public places 14.5%, at home 3.7%,

  • Yukon: in private vehicles and/or public places 7.0%, at home 6.8%, which should be interpreted with caution as the coefficient of variation is between 16.6% and 33.3%.

  • Northwest Territories: in private vehicles and/or public places 6.5%, at home 4.9%, which should be interpreted with caution as the coefficient of variation is between 16.6% and 33.3%.

  • Nunavut: in private vehicles and/or public places 15.2%, at home 12.5%, which should be interpreted with caution as the coefficient of variation is between 16.6% and 33.3%.

The age–standardized percentage of non–smokers aged 12 or older who were exposed to second–hand smoke in private vehicles and/or public places was significantly lower than the estimate for Canada at p<0.05 in Yukon and Northwest Territories.

The age–standardized percentage of non-smokers aged 12 or older who were exposed to second–hand smoke at home was significantly lower than the estimate for Canada at p<0.05 in Alberta and British Columbia.

The age–standardized percentage of non–smokers aged 12 or older who were exposed to second–hand smoke at home was significantly higher than the estimate for Canada at p<0.05 in New Brunswick and Quebec.
