Persons in visible minority groups as percent of total population, by age group, Canada, 1981 to 2001

This graph illustrates the evolution of the proportion of people who belonged to a visible minority, by age group (25 to 54 years, 55 to 64 years, 65 to 74 years, 75 to 84 years and 85 years and over) in 1981, 1991 and 2001. We noted that the higher the age group, the lower the proportion of people who belonged to a visible minority. For example, in 2001, the proportion for the 85 and over age group was less than 6%. In the 25 to 54 age group, this proportion was close to 14%. This being said, the proportion of people who belonged to a visible minority increased between 1981 and 2001 in all age groups. For people 65 years of age and up, the proportion rose from around 2% in 1981 to nearly 5% in 1991 and to approximately 7% in 2001.
