Distribution of the total immigrant population, by age group, 1981 and 2001

This graph indicates the distribution of the immigrant population based on 19 age groups of five years: 0 to 4 years, 5 to 9 years, 10 to 14 years, etc. The distributions of the 1981 and 2001 immigrant populations are compared. The main message of the graph is that the proportion of immigrants in the youngest age groups (less than 35 years of age) was higher in 1981 than in 2001. For instance, around 8% of all immigrants were between the ages of 25 and 29 in 1981, versus less than 6% in 2001. By contrast, the proportion of immigrants in the higher age groups was greater in 2001. In total, we see that the age pyramid of the immigrant population shifted to the right between 1981 and 2001, which means that the immigrant population is older than it used to be.
