The New Housing Price Index rose 0.3% from July to August. From August 1999 to August 2000, this index of contractors' selling prices increased 2.4%.
Ottawa-Hull registered the highest monthly rise; for the second consecutive month, continued increased demand, along with higher prices for building materials, labour and land, pushed prices up 1.9%. Charlottetown (+1.5%) and Montréal (+1.3%) also posted notable advances; in both cases higher prices for land, building materials and labour were passed on to new home buyers.

Sudbury-Thunder Bay and St. Catharines-Niagara registered small monthly decreases; nine urban centres showed no change.
On an annual basis, Ottawa-Hull led the way with a 7.2% increase, followed by Kitchener-Waterloo (+4.2%) and Montréal (+4.0%). Notable increases were also observed in St. Catharines-Niagara, Toronto and London. Four urban centres registered decreases on a year-over-year basis; the largest drop was in Victoria (-4.4%).
