Wednesday, July 6, 2005 For-hire motor carriers of freight, all carriersFourth quarter 2004There were an estimated 3,225 for-hire trucking companies based in Canada with annual revenues of $1 million or more in the fourth quarter of 2004, up from 2,736 carriers in the fourth quarter of 2003. Operating revenues increased 18.9% to $6.36 billion and operating expenses were up 16.1% to $5.83 billion compared with the fourth quarter of 2003. On a year-over-year basis, average operating revenues rose 0.9% to $1.97 million, while expenses decreased 1.5% to $1.81 million. The decrease in average expenses was driven by lower salaries and wages as well as by lower expenses in purchased transportation. The operating ratio (operating expenses divided by operating revenues) improved to 0.92 compared with 0.94 for the same quarter in 2003. For-hire trucking transportation revenues from domestic movements increased 16.6% to $4.03 billion from $3.46 billion in the fourth quarter of 2003. Revenues from international movements increased 25.9%, while inbound movements surged 34.3%. The quarterly data have been revised back to the beginning of the first quarter of 2003. The revisions resulted mainly from corrected treatment of companies making major acquisitions. Available on CANSIM: table 403-0002. Definitions, data sources and methods: survey number 2748.
