Summer 2010

The Summer 2010 print edition of Perspectives on Labour and Income, released today, includes five articles previously released in the online edition.

"Self-employment in the downturn" examines the sources and characteristics of an increase in self-employment in 2009.

"Labour market review 2009" highlights the trends behind the headline unemployment rate: where jobs were lost, who was most affected and how hours of work changed.

"Job-education match and mismatch: Wage differentials" estimates the wage premium for a close job-to-education match among university and college graduates.

"Layoffs in Canada" compares the risk of layoff between the 1990s and 2000s and examines the duration of jobless spells as well as various characteristics of the lost jobs and subsequent jobs.

"Women's participation and economic downturns" looks at the evolution of the employment rate and work hours of wives whose husbands suffered job loss during the last three labour market downturns.

This edition also features an update on minimum wage as well as the "What's New?" section, which highlights recent studies of interest from Statistics Canada and other organizations.
