Map description

The title of the map is "Undergraduate tuition fees, Canadian full-time students, selected census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations, 2016/2017"

The map legend presents four ranges of average tuition fees for Canadian undergraduate students in selected census metropolitan areas (CMAs) or census agglomerations (CAs). The darkest colour bars represent the highest average undergraduate tuition fees (from $8,000 to $10,999). The medium-colour bars represent a fee range of $6,000 to $7,999, and the lighter colour bars represent a fee range of $4,000 to $5,999. The lightest colour bars represent the lowest average undergraduate tuition fees, which range from $2,000 to $3,999.

The national average tuition fee for Canadian undergraduate students in 2016/2017 is $6,373. Each bar on the map is proportional to the cost of tuition. There are 5 CMAs in the highest tuition fee range, 12 CMAs and CAs in the second highest, 8 in the third highest, and 6 in the lowest. The CMAs and CAs in Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador have the lowest tuition fees (in the $2,000-to-$3,999 range), while 5 CMAs in Ontario have the highest tuition fees (in the $8,000-to-$10,999 range).

The map includes an inset of southern Ontario (from Toronto to Windsor) in the upper right-hand corner. This area has been enlarged to show the CMA tuition information in greater detail. The inset includes the CMAs of Toronto, St. Catharines–Niagara, Hamilton, Guelph, Kitchener–Cambridge–Waterloo, London and Windsor.

The map of Canada is grey with white lines indicating the boundaries between the provinces and the territories. The CMA and CA boundaries are dark grey, major bodies of water are blue, and the area outside the landmass of Canada is white and includes all bodies of water. The names of the CMAs and CAs are indicated on the map and their location is shown with the boundary outline of the CMA or CA.

Note(s): All tuition fee averages are weighted using the most recent enrolment data (2013). If two or more institutions are located within the same CMA or CA, the tuition fees were combined to calculate the weighted average. The 2011 CMA and CA geographic boundaries were used to produce the map. For more information, refer to CANSIM table 477-0121.
