The map is of Europe with political boundaries drawn for each country. The map indicates Canada's total merchandise trade (imports plus exports) on a Customs basis for every member country of the European Union in 2016. On this map a darker colour indicates a higher amount of total trade. Countries that are not members of the European Union not labelled and are depicted in white.

Category 1 (dark blue) represents countries where total merchandise trade is greater than or equal to $15 billion. The countries included in category 1 are Germany and the United Kingdom.

Category 2 (turquoise) represents countries where total merchandise trade is $5 billion to less than $15 billion. The countries included in category 2 are Belgium, France, Italy and the Netherlands.

Category 3 (green) represents countries where total merchandise trade is $1 billion to less than $5 billion. The countries included in category 3 are Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Poland, Spain, and Sweden.

Category 4 (light green) represents countries where total merchandise trade is $100 million to less than $1 billion. The countries included in category 4 are Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, and Slovakia.

Category 5 (light yellow) represents countries where total merchandise trade is less than $100 million. The countries included in category 5 are Croatia and Cyprus.
