Chart 1 Children under age 15 are less likely to be living with married parents in 2006

This is a vertical bar chart showing the percentage distribution of children under age 15 living with married parents, common-law parents or lone parents. Three years are shown on the chart: 1986, 1996 and 2006. The chart shows a declining percentage of children living with married parents and growing percentages living with common-law and lone parents. In 2006, 65.7% of children under age 15 lived with married parents, 14.6% with common-law parents and 18.3% lived with a lone parent. A small percentage (2.1% or less) of children are counted as living with others and are not shown on this chart for any of the years. Due to small conceptual changes to the definition of families in 2001, historical comparisons of census families, particularly lone-parent families should be interpreted with caution.
