Chart 1.3 is a bar chart showing the feelings of safety reported by Aboriginal people in 2009 compared with non-Aboriginal people. Feelings of safety are based on how a person feels walking alone in the neighbourhood after dark. The data examine people aged 15 and older, and exclude people living in Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Thirty-seven percent of Aboriginal people felt very safe, compared with 38% of non-Aboriginal people.

Thirty-six percent of Aboriginal people felt reasonably safe, compared with 42% of non-Aboriginal people. The difference is considered statistically significant. 

Among Aboriginal people, 13% felt somewhat safe, compared with 10% of non-Aboriginal people. The difference is considered statistically significant.

Seven percent of Aboriginal people felt very unsafe, compared with 3% of non-Aboriginal people. The difference is considered statistically significant. The percentage given for Aboriginal people should be used with caution.

Among both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, 7% did not walk alone.
