Chart 5.1 is a bar chart showing the average annual income of 25-year-olds in 2009 relative to their reading proficiency at age 15. Data are presented for men, women and both sexes combined.

For both sexes, higher reading proficiency led to higher income. Those with low proficiency earned an average income of $39,902. Those with medium proficiency averaged $42,580; those with high proficiency averaged $44,155.

Among men, those with low proficiency earned an average income of $43,945. Those with medium proficiency averaged $48,168; those with high proficiency averaged $48,848.

Among women, those with low proficiency earned an average income of $31,404. Those with medium proficiency averaged $36,001; those with high proficiency averaged $40,230.
