Chart 28.2 is a bar chart showing the reasons for retirement in 2009, by type of retirement: fully retired, partially retired and returned to work.

Data are for people with a single retirement experience. The reference group is those who are fully retired.

Among Canadians who had fully retired, 24% said their retirement was a result of health or disability compared with 16% of Canadians who partly retired and 14% of Canadians who returned to work.

Canadians who had fully retired were less likely to have done so to pursue other activities. Thirteen percent reported this reason for retiring compared with 23% of Canadians who partially retired and 18% of Canadians who returned to work.

Canadians who partially retired were more likely than others to report doing so because it was financially possible or they had sufficient years of service.
